Utah and the Civil War: Being the Story of the Part Played by the People of Utah in that Great Conflict

By: Margaret May Merrill Fisher and C. N. Lund, Editors

In April, 1862, President Lincoln called upon Brigham Young to raise, arm, and equip a group of men to be put at the disposal of the government. The Indians had become hostile and were doing damage to the much needed telegraph lines and mail routes. The mail stations between Ft. Bridger in Wyoming and west Nebraska had been destroyed by hostile Indians. The line of communication between Omaha, Nebraska and San Francisco had been cut-off at a perilous time. Within three days of the President’s call, a company of one hundred and six Mormon men began their march to the scene of the depredations. This book promises to tell us that story.
